The church, a splendid example of Venetian baroque architecture, was erected in 1687 by order of the doge according to the design of architect Baldassarre Longhena to celebrate Venice’s deliverance from a terrible plague.
The interior holds masterpieces by Titian and Tintoretto, like the famous painting of the Wedding at Cana (1561).
On 21 November every year the city celebrates the Festival of the Salute to pay homage to the Madonna of the Salute and commemorate the end of the plague with a great religious celebration.
On the feast-day a pontoon bridge is constructed to allow the faithful to go from St Mark's Square to the Basilica.
